What are the health and safety precautions of the use of pre-blended aromatherapy oils before using?

Pre-blended aromatherapy oils are a great and convenient way to use aromatherapy. Many aromatherapy practitioners offer pre-blends in different forms, mostly for massaging purposes. Most aromatherapy oils are sold on the basis of the effect they have on the body, like 'Relaxing Massage Oil', 'Stress Relief', or 'Sensuality Massage Oil'. Some oils, however, are used to target specific problems like muscle and joint rubs.

Aromatherapy isn't an exact science, and you need to be careful when using essential oils. It is easier to use pre-blends, but even then, you need to take some health and safety precautions before using pre-blended oils.

Consult a qualified aromatherapist. Blended oils are even sold online, and it's very easy to purchase them. keep in mind that most of these oils are very generic, and may not be effective if there are any specific issues you want to address. Good aromatherapists will often blend oils specifically for you, and these will be much more effective than pre-blends. Of course, pre-blends are great for routine relaxing massages.

Pre-blends have a shorter lifespan. Pure essence oils can last up to 10 years if they are stored correctly but pre-blends have been mixed with other carrier oils, and do not last for as long. You should use them as soon as you can to be able to enjoy their complete efficacy.

Read the instructions. Please take the time to carefully read the instructions that come with the blend. Some blends are made up of different oils, without a carrier oil, and will need to be diluted before use. Pure essential oils are very span and rather harsh on the skin , so make sure that you do not accidentally use them directly on your skin. Also, different oils have different methods of usage, and it is important that you follow this. Some oils may not be used with specific conditions like epilepsy or by pregnant women.

Test for allergies. Before you use the blend on your whole body, test to see if you are allergic to the oil. Apply a small bit of oil on your skin, and wait 24 hours to see if any allergies develop. If nothing happens, then feel free to use the blend.

Use less, not more. Don't apply too much oil, as this may have an adverse effect; just use as much as is necessary, or instructed. If you can make do with one drop, don't use two.

Keep away from children. Think of pre-blends (and indeed, all oils) as medicines that children should not be allowed access to. Aromatherapy oils should not be consumed internally, and this is especially true for blends, as a lot of other ingredients also go into them.
