How To Clear Throat Congestion And Post Nasal Drip

By Patricia | October 1, 2009

The need to clear our throat is a very common occurrence, especially in the over polluted air we breathe in today. However, the constant requirement to clear your throat could be quite an inconvenience to your daily life, while also being a source of much irritation for people in close proximity. Throat congestion could be caused by a number of various factors that may exist in various combinations or even singularly. As mentioned, the air today contains a number of dust particles that we inhale along with the oxygen. Some of these dust particles may tend to get lodged in the air passages that run through the throat while a habit of smoking could only serve to worsen the condition. Post nasal drip is drainage from the nose and the sinuses that tends to drip down the back of the throat and cause a significant amount of irritation. Post nasal drip can cause, in addition to the regular urge to clear your throat, a partial or complete temporary loss of one’s voice. The affected individual may also experience the constant feeling of mucus present on the vocal cords. This feeling tends to worsen considerably during the night while the individual is asleep and can be quite troublesome when he or she awakes in the morning.

Treatment And Home Remedies

In order to soothe the vocal chords and throat area, you should try sipping on some warm water that has been mixed with a tablespoon of honey and juice extracted from half a lemon. Gargling is also extremely beneficial and should be performed at several times over the course of the day with the help of some salt water to which some turmeric has been added. You could also create a herbal infusion by adding two cups of water to one tablespoon of crushed aniseed and boiling them together. When the concoction has cooled down, strain it and drink the solution everyday. Using the dried young shoots of pine and boiling it in some water is also known to be extremely beneficial. If the root cause of the problem happens to be the post nasal drip, you should try using a nasal wash to drain the mucus and germs from the nose and sinuses. This will bring temporary relief from the post nasal drip, thereby lessening the effects of voice loss. Increase the amount of water you drink as this will help constantly clear the throat passages if consumed in small quantities spread throughout the course of the day.
