A common affliction in the case of children, pimples in the ears can also affect adults. The commonest cause of pimples in the ear in the case of children is injury caused by fingernails. As any parent knows, keeping a child’s hands and fingers clean is an uphill task and when the child scratches his or her ears, the dirty fingernails may cause an injury and a subsequent infection, resulting in a pimple.
Pimples, boils or infections such as acne in the ear canal can be quite painful, resuling in inflammation and even fever. It is better not to try to burst the pimple as it may only serve to aggravate the condition. Instead, it is advisable to consult your doctor immediately.
Causes:
As mentioned earlier, scratches from dirty fingernails are the most common cause of pimples in the ear. The pimples may occur in the outer area of the ear or even in the ear canal, which is the tube connecting the outer ear to the ear drum. Pimples in the ear canal may be caused by bacterial infections within the ear canal. They may also be caused by blocked pores, ingrown hair or any trauma to the skin of the ear.
Home Remedies:
- You may not require any special treatment to get rid of the pimples in your ear since these pimples will often disappear on their own after about a week. Keeping the ear clean at these times is essential to prevent the development of any infection. If the pimple does not clear up on its own after a week, then it is time to consult your doctor.
- To keep your ear clean, a clean cloth in hot water and dab it on the ear, taking care not to press down too hard on the pimple. Keeping a warm towel lightly pressed over your ear may also help to ease the pain. Under no circumstances must you attempt to burst the pimple with a needle as this may result in an infection and other complications.
- The pimple may also cause itching and irritation and you should desist from scratching the ear as this too may lead to infection and other complications. This however, may be easier said than done, especially in the case of children. These symptoms should clear up once the pimple or boil bursts.
- For pimples or boils on the outer ear, try applying a poultice made from cornmeal paste. Onion too, can be cut and applied to the pimple. Its antibacterial properties should help prevent any infection from taking root.
- A mixture made of fifty percent warm water and fifty percent hydrogen peroxide can be applied on the ear. The person will have to be lying down on his or her side with the affected ear facing upwards when the mixture is applied. Leave it there for five minutes before asking the person to turn on his or her side and allowing the mixture to drain from the ear. Once this is done, apply a few drops of a mixture consisting of 5 parts olive oil and 1 part margosa oil tosoak the ear. This will help to speed up the healing process.
- Another home remedy uses a mixture of four parts mustard oil, one part of carom seeds and two cloves of garlic. The mixture should be crushed and boiled and the oil then strained. Few drops can be applied to the ear after it has been cooled. This will help to relieve the pain.
You should consult your doctor before attempting any of these home remedies especially if the pimple is within the ear canal.
