You would be assured to know that medical science deems that having your menses even once in three months is considered normal and is not a cause for concern. In fact, if you went to an obstetrician with the complaint of having your period once in three months, the doctor would probably ask you if you really do want to induce your period and if the doctor does prescribe medicines, it is probably for your piece of mind rather than because of medical necessity. It is important to understand the processes that occur in the body during a menstrual cycle before you embark upon a natural treatment. Incidentally, there are some natural methods of inducing a period, though their efficacy depends on one’s person constitution and reaction to these substances.
Causes
During a period, the endometrial lining that was created during the ovulation phase is destroyed when the body does not detect a fertilized egg. The uterine muscles then start a process of killing off the endometrial tissue by choking the blood supply to it. This sometimes causes pain that is a part of the cramping you can undergo during menses. Additionally, the uterine muscles convulse and contract as part of the mechanism to push the endometrium out of the uterus and vagina. This process and hypoxia of the endometrium causes inflammation and fever like symptoms that can be debilitating. The most important part of this process is the trigger mechanism that controls menstrual cycles. The major hormones that are involved are estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen is the hormone that is dominant to the point of ovulation and progesterone after the egg is fertilized. It can therefore be ascertained that supplementing the amount of estrogen in your body could help accelerate the cycle.
This can be done by supplementation with phytoestrogens. These are available in a very wide variety of foods but the highest concentrations are found in flax seed, soybeans, and tofu. These should be ingested on a daily basis to ensure that the hormonal balance is maintained. You might also want to consider a consultation with your doctor of the contraceptive devices that you might be using. Usually these work by inducing a period but if you have been taking these over a period of time then this could have had an effect on your cycle time. This argument is only valid if the change in your cycles has happened after the use of contraception.
