Sore gums are the result of gum disease. There are two stages to gum disease; gingivitis and periodontitis. When bacteria present in the plaque on the teeth affect the gums and cause inflammation, it is termed as gingivitis. It is characterized by swelling and reddening of the gums. Bleeding may also occur while brushing the teeth. Plaque is the thin sticky layer that forms on the teeth and is composed of bacteria. The plaque must be removed every day by brushing or else it can harden, in which case it can be removed only by a dentist.
Treatment
Gingivitis can also develop in the form of a condition called Vincent’s infection, which is very painful and characterized by the growth of an ulcer at the edge of the gums. This disease takes place due to improper oral hygiene habits, stress, smoking and bad eating habits. Gingivitis if untreated can turn into periodontitis. The bacteria in the hardened plaque secrete toxins and sulfur in the form of waster matter. These products are harmful for the gums and bones of the teeth. They start collecting in what are known as periodontal pockets which are the areas between the teeth and gums. The sulfur compounds cause bad breath and if the condition is left untreated, it could travel deeper inside the periodontal pockets and may even damage the sensitive roots of the teeth. This will gradually result in loss of teeth.
Home Remedies
Protection against sore gums can be obtained by brushing the teeth after meals. The method of brushing must also be proper and should cover all areas of the teeth, including the hard to reach areas between teeth. Flossing is effective in cleaning areas of cavities and the gum region. Use a toothbrush that is soft and clean it properly after use. Cabbage contains anti inflammatory qualities and as such is effective in treating sore and infected gums. The juice may be extracted from white cabbage and applied to the sore gums. Deficiencies of nutrients such as vitamin B and C can also lead to damaged gums. You can correct this by consuming foods that are rich in these vitamins. Applying marigold tincture to the sore areas using a cotton bud is also known to be beneficial. Lavender tincture works well as an antiseptic and can be dabbed on to the affected areas of the gums. Applying lemon juice to the gums is also helpful in reducing tenderness.
