Running marathons are race events or long distance running events that takes place on the road. The distance that is covered in running marathons is 42.195 kilometers, which is 26.22 miles. The marathon was originally one of the modern Olympic events in the year 1886; however, the distance it was supposed to cover did not get standardized till the year 1921. Over 500 running marathons take place all across the world, in a single year. Some of the larger marathons have had tens of thousands of participants competing at the same time.
Running marathons are not for everyone. People who plan to participate in a running marathon need to be fit and should undergo a proper running marathon training program. Regular marathon runners should also make sure that they are equipped with the right running gear for marathons. This includes the right socks and running shoes, appropriate clothing and a pack for water. The most important piece of equipment for any marathon runner is a pair of sneakers or running shoes.
Running half marathons
A half marathon is a road event, which covers half the distance that a regular marathon does. Hence half marathons span across 21.098 kilometers or 13.1 miles. These events have increased in popularity in the last few years, as most people seem to prefer running half marathons, to the regular ones. One of the main reasons for this could be the fact that the distance is less challenging. Therefore, most people who are relatively fit find it possible to compete in half marathons, with a fair amount of success. Moreover, the level and intensity of training required to participate in half marathons is much less as compared to full marathons. People who want to run in half marathons can begin their practice or their training regime 12 to 16 weeks before the event.
Running ultramarathons
Ultramarathons are sporting events that cover a longer distance than the regular marathon length. Running ultramarathons could cover a distance of 50 kilometers (31.07 miles) or 100 kilometers (62.14 miles). There are certain running ultramarathons that do not cover a fixed distance, but last for a specific time duration; the runner that covers that most distance within that time frame is declared the winner.
Before participating in any kind of marathon, even a half marathon, it is best to consult a physician and undergo a physical examination, to check the levels of fitness. It is not even advisable to begin training for a marathon, without getting a go-ahead from a doctor.
