Walking And Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by the bones of your body becoming extremely weak as well as brittle making you susceptible to a number of injuries especially a fracture. Thinning of the bones is a common occurrence as you progress with age; however, if you are experiencing way too many fractures, it is a problem of concern and therefore, needs medical intervention. A recent study carried out indicated that 50 percent of women who were above 50 years of age had very low bone density and therefore, were at a high risk of getting a fracture. Also, there is a high possibility that majority of those who are suffering from osteoporosis are not even aware of being affected by the condition and thus, there is immense need to diagnose and treat this condition in time. There are a number of treatments available for osteoporosis and one of the best natural ways of doing this is by exercising. Exercises help to prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis and also lower the rate at which bone loss is occurring once it begins. A lot of weight bearing exercises is recommended for osteoporosis as they essentially need the person to perform activities on their feet. In such cases your bones would provide support to your weight and walking would be very helpful. Thus, it is considered as one of the best exercises for this condition.

Walking reduces loss of mineral as it has a direct effect on the bones of your hips, legs and lower spine and if you are suffering from osteoporosis, you need to walk at least 1 mile each day. However, there is a lot of debate on whether walking and osteoporosis alone are sufficient as some believe there has to be addition of new weights for the bone to grow. Therefore, people follow resistance training along with walking or other exercises as they gradually add weight. Yoga is also very helpful in treating this condition as there are a number of yoga poses that one could perform and you need to make sure that these poses involve weight bearing or else they will not be effective. One of the yoga poses involves you to stand on one foot and balance your weight on it while you take your other leg behind and hold it with your hand. You could consult your doctor and ask him about the other yoga poses you could try to alleviate the condition.
