Dru Yoga is a powerful, effective yet graceful kind of yoga, based on gentle, flowing exercises, power-driven breathing and visualization. It was introduced to the West by Dr. Mansukh Patel more than two decades ago. He was taught the principles of this style of Yoga from his father and subsequently shared the principles and techniques with a small group of friends in North Wales. They then proceeded to establish the Life Foundation. Dru Yoga has become a global hallmark of this movement. The aim of the foundation was to create a platform in this hectic, fast-paced world where folks of all ages, cultures and abilities could explore the realms of spirituality and Yoga.
The word Dru is derived from the Sanskrit word Dhruva, which means still and unchanging. Traditionally, Dhruva was the name of the North Star that appears to be motionless, while all others seem to be moving around it. In Dru Yoga, you cultivate awareness inside yourself. This is called the Dhruvakasha, meaning to say, spacious and still, like the eye of a storm. While the tumultuous winds of life blow all around you, Dru Yoga teach you to remain steadfast and calm. In essence, Dru Yoga was developed to help transform and transcend emotional pain and has today grown into a powerful set of techniques, which help the practitioner transform his or her health by balancing physical, mental and emotional energies.
Key Principles Of Dru Yoga
Dru Yoga states that, basically and in principle, our bodies are directly linked to our emotions. In fact, scientific experiments have revealed that body cells respond to emotional stimuli, for instance anger. These experiments went on to show how there is no difference between our bodies and our emotions and that all our bodies are in fact run by our emotions. This modern approach confirms the ancient Yogic principle that our bodies, thoughts and emotional self are inextricably intertwined.
Dru Yoga employs this principle and acts on those regions of the body where emotions are ensnared. They help release these trapped emotions by using techniques that help transform their energy.
Dru Yoga focuses upon the flow of energy through visualization and sequences, and helps direct our awareness inwards. Here, it is not at all important to be able to perfect a posture. The maxim used here is: ‘perfection is the best you can do at any point of time’. All the visualization and sequences can be adapted to suit different age groups, including the old and infirm, excitable children, or people harboring any physical or mental disabilities.
