In one word the answer to this question is most definitely Yes. Think about it. Why would any form of yoga, if done correctly, have any adverse effects? Iyengar yoga is an established yoga practice based on the principles of the Sage Patanjali, who formulated 196 yogic dicta in the fifth century BC. B.K.S Iyengar, the founder of Iyengar Yoga, studied these formulations thoroughly and started his institute based on it. Now popularly known as Iyengar yoga, his style of teaching has attained worldwide recognition and has serious and dedicated followers.
One of the possibilities of the above question arising is the austerity attached to this form of yoga. However it is not as tough as it is often perceived to be. It does require dedication and adherence to certain rules laid down by the guru; but then any form of yoga requires that.
Iyengar Yoga is closely modeled on the principles of Ashtanga Yoga, which has the sun salutation pose at its very core. The correct sequence of poses and close observation of breath are important principles of Iyengar yoga. It also uses a lot of props like wooden batons, belts, sticks, and ropes in its practice to enable students to perform and maintain each pose correctly. Its eventual goal is to lend the practitioner good healthy, clarity of thought, and stability of emotions.
Regular practice of Iyengar yoga has helped many a persons with minor as well as chronic ailments. People with skeleto-muscular disorders, nervous disorders, circulatory disorders, lower back pain (who hasn’t complained of one at least once in their lifetime), and respiratory disorders, can incorporate this yoga into their daily regimes as it has proven to be beneficial in helping cure them.
People with HIV, who have been practicing this form of yoga, have vouched for it saying that their quality of life has improved substantially and they find themselves with more energy and have become life positive in their approach with consistent practice.
Women, especially those experiencing menstrual and menopausal problems, are great candidates for Iyengar yoga. Modified for these women, Iyengar yoga has been known to improve their physiological and psychological health. Children can be taught this yoga playfully. The props make it fun for children. It helps improve concentration and develops attributes like courage and independence.
Many people suffering from hormonal imbalances such as thyroid disorders have gone off hormone replacement therapies by doing corresponding yoga asanas or poses prescribed by B.K.S Iyengar. All these facts may seem miraculous at first, especially to people who swear by modern medicine, but yoga goes back to the ancient ages and we all know that ancient wisdom has always outlasted modern solutions.
