Yoga involves physical and spiritual exercise of the body and mind and has been practiced for centuries. One type of yoga is the Surya Namaskar or Sun Salutation. The Sun Salutation is a series of twelve postures performed in a single, graceful flow. This exercise must be performed early in the morning for the full benefits to reach your body.
Winter is not only a time of high stress, given end-of-year deadlines, but also of festivities. Moreover, given the low temperatures in winter, our body becomes prone to colds, coughs, and joint aches. The Sun Salutation exercise is a great way to keep your body warm and strong during winter. It is important to follow this routine daily, and not only during winters to reach a state of harmony and well-being.
You can perform the Sun Salutation exercise in the luxury of your own home. The first pose is the Tada Asana or mountain pose where you need to stand still and take deep breaths improving your awareness of your body. You could concentrate on keeping your body warm. For the next two poses, you need to arch your back as far as possible and then bring your hands down to your knees. Both these light exercises help improve flexibility.
The fourth position is a lunge, which enhances the strength of the legs and gives the spine a lateral stretch. The next exercise is in the plank position, which works the shoulder and lower back areas and helps ease muscle tension in those areas. This is then followed by the push-up position to strengthen your arms. The upward dog position and downward dog position are performed in quick succession. For the upward dog position, while lying on your stomach, you need to bend your torso. From this position, lift your hips to reach the downward dog position. These positions increase your energy levels and help tone your body.
Lastly, the lunge, the hand-to-knee position, the hands up arch and the mountain pose are performed again to end the routine. Returning to the initial positions restores the energy to the body and helps you maintain your body temperature while keeping you fit and healthy.
This practice helps improve the functioning of the endocrine and nervous system. The Sun Salutation can also be used as a warm-up exercise before performing other yoga exercises. While doing all the above exercises, it is extremely important to concentrate on your breathing exercises or Pranayama to gain maximum benefits.
