What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is probably one of the oldest forms of Yoga that is popular in the Western world.  It places a lot of emphasis on meditation and chanting and the movements are less strenuous as compared to Ashtanga or Bikram Yoga.

Meditation and deep breathing techniques are employed between the various Yogic exercises and at the end of the exercises, great emphasis is laid on meditation. Although it may not burn as many calories as its more vibrant counterparts, Kundalini Yoga is probably one of the best methods of connecting with one’s body and mind.

What is a Kundalini Yoga Diet?

Kundalini Yoga diet is a strict vegetarian diet with an emphasis on natural grown organic foods. Partaking of such a diet helps in the development of vital energy and spiritual consciousness.

The use of raw foods such as cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, sprouts and parsley is encouraged. You may even use spices such as ginger, cayenne, cinnamon and basil to liven up the taste. Whole grain foods also play a big role in a Kundalini Yoga diet as they help to promote strength and digestion. Kundalini Yoga exercises are designed to flush toxins out from the body. Hence it is also important to drink plenty of water when practicing Kundalini Yoga.

What foods should I include in my Kundalini Yoga Diet?

The foods that should be included in a Kundalini Yoga Diet include fresh fruit, whole grains such as rice and wheat, all vegetables with the exception of onion and garlic, beans and nuts, clarified butter as a cooking medium, natural sugars such as jaggery or honey, dairy products, sweet spices, herbal teas, plenty of water and fresh lime juices.

Foods that should be avoided include meat, fish and eggs, processed and junk foods, extremely spicy food containing garlic or onions, fried food, canned food, processed foods including refined sugar or flour, artificial sweeteners, alcohol, tobacco and other stimulants.

Meals should not be eaten up to three hours prior performing Kundalini Yoga as the various Yogic postures place a lot of strain on the stomach. If need be, you can munch on a snack bar to ensure that you get sufficient energy to complete all your Yogic exercises.

A Kundalini Yoga diet not only helps you to lose weight, but also helps to energize the body, assists in the process of flushing out toxins and generally results in a more simple and spiritual outlook on life.
